Ultra Brick Reflection!

My favourite Lego activity was the one where we passed around the Lego base plate because it taught me that people have different ideas to what we have, and we should celebrate other people's differences. The activity also taught me you can think of so many different ideas for what to add to what other people have done.

Hi, today I am going to be showing you my reflection that I typed after having a company called, ¨House of Bricks¨ visited our school. That Friday, two hubs including my hub had three activities, all in different hubs. Each Lego activity included either teamwork, grit or perseverance, one all at the same time. The activities all taught me something important, but, most importantly they were fun.

My least favourite Lego activity was the Mosaic activity because it was hard trying to imagine what to place on your small base plate, and not to mention taking the thin, tiny bricks off with a Lego lever. Often, bricks would be stuck together and you would have to take both off. Even though this was a fun activity, I would say this is the one I least enjoyed.

The activity that tested my perseverance the most was the tower- building because it was tough creating stacks that would hold up the quirky, unstable tower. But, together with me and 9 others, we managed to build a stable, tall tower, being so high it took our team to first place.

The most challenging activity was the racing cars because once you had created a car you thought was perfect, it only went a few centimeters off the rail. It was quite challenging to find the perfect pieces to place on your hopefully speeding car, and me and my partner broke, tested and modified our way into seventh place.

I enjoyed working collaboratively with others because each activity went way faster than it would’ve been alone. Almost all the activities involved teamwork, and each and every time the people I worked with listened to my ideas, and helped me to achieve the goal. And even though some of our team members argued, we helped each other out and everyone had a part to play.

What is your favourite Lego activity?

Super Secret Empathy Literacy!

Hi, today I am going to be showing you my empathy-based writing this week, named ¨Umbrella¨. Our goal was to use a range of written features to engage the audience, use simple and compound sentences with a variety of beginnings, lengths and structures, use some complex sentences to create pace, flow and interest & ensure that most writing is grammatically correct. Me and other peers in a group got help from a teacher to type down this text.

                  Umbrella

Early one stormy morning, the door to Miss Elm’s Home For Children opened wide. The girl with the vibrant sunflower yellow umbrella, limped nervously into the orphanage before finding a home for her umbrella. Not wanting to be seen, Boris swiftly twirled his head around the door frame so that he was hidden from view. Standing off to the side, the girl gazed at the glorious scene while the children searched in the box for once-loved companions. The girl grinned as she observed the young boy zooming around the room like a bolt of lightning. Her smile melted abruptly as she looked back at the umbrella stand and all that was left was a few dirty puddles. Her precious umbrella had vanished.

Duplicate Olympic Data!

Today I will be showing you me and my friend´s new and improved medal table. We collected our data from a slideshow and embeded the information onto a spreadsheet. Using the info on the spreadsheet, we created a Line Graph explaining the medal table in the Tokyo Olympics 2020. We also created a doc for a more clearer explanation. To finish it off, we each wrote a statement on the graph.

How would you show the informantion?

Muddling Medal Maths!

Today I'm going to be showing you me and my friend's Tokyo Olympics Medal Chart Graph. This graph shows the number of medals compared to each country. To collect the data, we gathered info from a slideshow and typed it down on a spreadsheet. Me and my friend added statements below the Graph.

Who's your favourite medalist?

Swiftly Statistical Data!

Today I will be showing you the graphs I created using the data I collected. Our goal was to display data using a stem and leaf graph, choose an appropriate data, display using more than one variable, interpret information from graphs plan an investigation. These graphs explain the teams in the Tumu Hub compared to their birthday months. We collected data together on a sheet to create these graphs. I made statements on each of my graphs, the Bar Graph and the Line Graph.

Do you have a statement you would like to make?

Margaret Mahy Trip!

Today I'm going to be telling you about my amazing trip to town! I learned tons about my culture, kowhaiwhai patterns and hidden things about my culture that you would never think of. For example, the concrete path in the Margaret Mahy Playground has a Māori song etched into, telling the tale of when the Māori culture found New Zealand.

Yesterday the Tumu hub went on an awesome trip around town, where we learned about kowhaiwhai patterns etched into the places we would never think they would set place. We had fun at Victoria Square, finding interesting patterns etched into statues, stone benches, a waka facing up and even a large, pointing rock. There were also two amazing fountains that astonishingly light when the moon blacks out the skies. And it´s amazing how much artistry and hard work goes into creating these amazing and wonderful kowhaiwhai etchings.

My favourite part of the trip was paddling our way with the waka around the majestic Avon River, because it was very fun using Maori words to keep the balance of the pattern-etched boat.

Something I learnt was in the Margaret Mahy Family Playground (or Takaro a Poi), a song was carved into a long concrete pathway following around the park, the song telling how the Maori people found New Zealand.

The thing I found the most interesting was the hidden kowhaiwhai patterns all around parts of     Town. I especially found the mats interesting because they were originally weavings, and also because the bricks were placed diagonally, making the whole idea very creative.

This trip has helped me with my PBL because it helped me learn about our Maori culture and iwi, helping because our PBL question relates to our turangawaewae (or a place to stand). I could use the knowledge I have to help me with any future .

Do you have an interesting fact about the Māori culture you would like to tell me?
